Rendering is an essential component of the circular economy. The Philippines consumes an estimated 3.5 million tons of meat each year, of which an estimated 33% or more never reaches our plates. Slaughterhouses, food processing plants, and supermarkets are left with large quantities of organic products that will never be consumed. Ensuring that these leftovers are recycled in a safe and environmentally sustainable way, is where API comes in!

Transforming organic residues into new ingredients through rendering is a safe and environmentally friendly way
to dispose of agri-food industry waste.
Agri-food industry by-products are typically composed of microbiologically active material that may contain viruses, bacteria, protozoa, parasites, prions, toxins, drug residues, and other chemicals. In the interest of the public health these biologically active materials need to be eliminated. Rendering does the job by killing these pathogens using extreme heat which fully sterilizes the material making it harmless.
By repurposing these materials and diverting them from landfills, API is reducing by 80% the amount of greenhouse gas emissions associated with their disposal, while at the same time taking pressure off local landfills that have limited capacity and would otherwise have to accept this waste. We estimate that our current rendering operations reduce the amount of annual green house gas emissions in the Philippines by an amount equivalent to taking more than 43,800 cars off the road each year.
Rendering is very efficient in resource recovery, converting approximately 99% of the fats, proteins, and nutrients in meat by-products into valuable ingredients for animal feeds. According to the US EPA’s food recovery hierarchy, the best use of agri-food industry waste is to feed animals. Rendering makes this possible.
While rendering is the safest and most environmentally sustainable process for recycling agri-food waste, we are committed to further minimizing our environmental footprint wherever possible. We implement best practices and leading technologies to continuously reduce our energy and water consumption and our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The rendering process requires steam. At our CDO facility, this steam is created by a boiler fueled by biomass. We switched our boiler fuel from coal to biomass in order to reduce GHGs associated with our process.
We engineered our rendering facility to efficiently utilize water through a closed-loop system, which allows us to capture, clean and reuse the water we utilize in our recycling process.
Our rendering facility produces no waste; all materials are upcycled and there is no wastewater discharge. Also, our environmental control systems, which include condenser and scrubber capacities for a facility two times our size, ensure no noxious odors are emitted into the surrounding area.
Each year, we invest a significant amount of time and money in making sure our company happily coexists with nearby communities. We regularly sponsor medical missions, community pantries and other community engagements. We aim to facilitate a harmonious coexistence with all our community stakeholders.
API also aims to provide employment opportunities to people in the community. Although the best fit with our company is always our priority, we aim to hire and train local talent so that much of the company’s economic success can remain in the community.
The agri-food industry generates large quantities of unconsumed by-products each year. Employing a residuals-to-resources model, we reclaim meat and food by-products and transform them into high-quality, sustainable ingredients for a range of animal feed applications.
